Tombstone Tuesday: A Taylor Tombstone

For this week's Tombstone Tuesday, I have decided to post another photograph of a grave marker from the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery in Livingston County, Michigan. This grave is for a Margaret Taylor, and other than the information on the grave, I don't know anything about her. I'm not related to her, so I don't have any further information. Enjoy!

Tombstone Tuesday: Another Placeway Tombstone

For this Tombstone Tuesday, I have posted two photographs of another Placeway tombstone in the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery. The top photograph is a closer view of the writing on the marker. Unfortunately, I cannot make out the first name on the stone. All I know is that this a tombstone for a son of a Joseph and Addie Placeway, and I do not have any further information on the family. I'll have to look and see if a cemetery transcription was done on this cemetery to see if this person's name is listed.

Tombstone Tuesday: A Sunken and Broken Tombstone

I'm posting a little bit later for this Tombstone Tuesday because I was busy earlier with school related business. The photographs above are of a tombstone in Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery where it appears as though the grave maker has broken into two. The top appears to be in front the base, and it looks like it is sinking into the ground. I cannot read whose name is on the stone because it is sunken. I think I would have had to remove the grass from the stone, and as I did not want to risk destroying the stone, I chose not to try and uncover the name. I'll have to look and see if a transcription was done of this cemetery, and then I might be able to determine who is buried there. Of course, I won't be able to do so anytime soon because I am back at school, and I won't have very much time to research the cemetery.

Tombstone Tuesday: A Placeway Tombstone ...

For this Tombstone Tuesday, I am posting two photographs of a tombstone from the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery. This marker happens to be the tombstone of a Mercy Placeway, who has one of the last names that makes up part of the cemetery's name. In the photograph that is zoomed in more, you can seen that there is some small print listed below the inscription, but unfortunately, I cannot make out what it says. Other than that, the tombstone is in excellent condition.

For this Tombstone Tuesday, I am posting two images of a tombstone that I had previously shared on this blog. As you can tell, this grave is for a woman named Elizabeth, but unfortunately I cannot make out who her husband was. I would have to do some research to figure out what her last name was. I posted two photographs so that you might be able to remember my first post on this stone. Enjoy!

Last week, I posted two photographs of an Oliver family tombstone, and for this Tombstone Tuesday, I am also posting a picture of another Oliver family tombstone. Until I looked at the photograph, I did not realize that this tombstone was of another child from the same family. Of course, I'm not related to the family, so I do not have any further information on this family.

For this Tombstone Tuesday, I have included two photographs of a tombstone in the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery that I posted before. I added the second photograph so that one could be able to read the inscription. This tombstone memorializes the deaths of two children of the Oliver family who died in the 1850s. Unfortunately, I do not have anymore information on this family.

Tombstone Tuesday: Clarissa Hodgeman's Tombstone - Revisited

As you may or may not remember, a few months ago, I visited the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery and took pictures of the tombstones in the cemetery, but the pictures did not turn out very well. Well, earlier today, I visited the cemetery again, and I retook the pictures I took last time. Of course I also took more photographs, but I haven't finished photographing the whole cemetery. The last time that I posted a photograph of this tombstone, the picture quality was terrible, but as you can see in this picture, the quality is excellent. In the coming weeks, I will be reposting the photographs I have posted of the graves in Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery, and hopefully, I'll be able to finish taking pictures of the graves in this cemetery. Just A Little Note ...

I just want to let everyone know that I plan to post the next part to the story about the search for my ancestor's grave soon. I realize I haven't posted a part in months, but I've been busy lately with summer classes. Unfortunately, I do not remember if there was any writing on the stones, so I cannot write anymore about these stones at the moment. Unfortunately, the quality of the picture is terrible, and I cannot remember the name of the person buried there. (The tombstone was in excellent condition, by the way. All I could make out is that one of the person's buried there is named Elizabeth. It appears as though her tombstone has broken apart. Tombstone Tuesday: A Hodgeman Marker

For this Tombstone Tuesday, I am posting a picture of the tombstone of Clarissa Hodgeman. I do not know anything about her other than what is on the tombstone, and I only chose this picture because this photograph was the only photograph that came out clearly when I originally took photos of the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery. (Of course, I haven't been back to the cemetery yet, but I do plan to do so eventually.) If I get a chance to do research on the Placeway/Whitcomb cemetery, I'll try to uncover more information on this Clarissa Hodgeman.

Since last Tuesday, I haven't been able to return to Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery due to the fact that the weather hasn't been the best. So, I am posting another one of those photographs that I originally took. This photograph would be placed next to the other photograph on the left. Belated Tombstone Tuesday: A View of Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery

I'm late in posting for this week's Tombstone Tuesday primarily because I visited the Placeway/Whitcomb Cemetery yesterday and took some pictures. The picture above is a partial view of the cemetery. I wasn't able to take a picture that outlined the size of the cemetery, so I had to take pictures of it in pieces. Unfortunately, the quality of the picture is not very good because I have a cheap digital camera. I hope to take some pictures with a different camera next time, so the pictures should be better the next time I post them.

Tombstone Tuesday: A Closer View of an Oswalt Grave

As you may have noticed, I haven't posted any Tombstone Tuesday posts for the last couple of weeks, and that has been due to the fact that I have been busy and forgot to do posts ahead of the time. But, I've remembered to do one for this week, and so here is this week's Tombstone Tuesday.

The photograph above was taken in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, and is a closer view of the Oswalt tombstones I posted a couple of weeks ago. Again, I do not have any known connections to this Oswalt, but I took a picture of his grave during my first visit to Riverside Cemetery to make sure that I had taken a photograph of all the Oswalt graves in the cemetery.

Searching For My Ancestor's Grave: A Wild Goose Chase, Part Four

In my previous post, I left off as my grandfather and I were heading to the Three Rivers Public Library. We were hoping that we would be able to view some old funeral home records held at the library and that those records would provide some answers as to where our ancestor was buried.

We arrived at the library, and went over to the desk to ask one of the librarians about the funeral home records. The librarian claimed that the library did not have the funeral records, and then demanded to know who told us about the library's holding of old funeral records. After explaining that one of the funeral homes had informed us about the old records, the librarian informed us that she did not know anything about them. (Whenever I recall this incident, I always cringe because I feel we probably asked the questions in the wrong way, thereby angering the librarian. Of course, I could be wrong, but I still believe the fault probably lies with us. So, when I think about this, I always feel embarrassed because I feel we could have possibly avoided offending the librarian.)

After talking to the librarian, we went over to the local history room, and I was able to find the funeral records. Unfortunately, I discovered that the funeral records only covered the decades of the 1910s and 1920s and not the 1940s, as we needed.

So, with the determination that that lead was a dead end, we decided to visit the other funeral home on the list I was given. In the next post, I will write about our visit with the second funeral home. Stay tuned for the next post ...

Tombstone Tuesday: A Stook Gravestone

For this week's Tombstone Tuesday I am posting another photograph of a tombstone in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, Michigan. The grave above is of a Sadie Stook, and her grave adjacent to my ancestor's, Adam Oswalt, grave. As far as I know, she is not related to my family, but at the time I took the picture, I did not know if she was a relative or not. Of course, I took the photograph to just to be through with cemetery research.

Tombstone Tuesday: Shelhart Family Graves

For this week's Tombstone Tuesday I am posting another photograph of graves in Riverside Cemetery. The graves above are the tombstones of Charles Shelhart and his wife, Susan. As far as I know, I'm connected to them genetically, but they are connected to my family in another way. After Adam Oswalt's wife died, his children were split up and taken in by other families. Among the families who took in Adam's children were the Shelhart's, and they took in two of Adam's sons, Henry and Adam. Even though there does not appear to be a biological connection between the families, they are connected to my Oswalt ancestors due to the fact that they became foster parents for two of my ancestor's children.

Tombstone Tuesday: Other Unrelated Oswalt Graves

As you can tell from the title of this post, the graves above are of two Oswalts who are not related to me. (Of course, as far as I know.) The graves are located in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. Although the two people above are not related to me, I took the picture because they had the last name of Oswalt, and at the time I took the pictures, my grandparents and I were looking for Oswalts buried in Three Rivers. I am guessing from the tombstone that these graves are of a mother and son, but that is just my guess since I do not know for sure.

Tombstone Tuesday: A Closer View - The Schultz Graves

Last week, I posted a photograph that gave an overview of Adam Oswalt's grave and his daughter and son-in-law. For this week's post I am posting a picture that gives a closer view of Adam's daughter and son-in-law's graves. Adam's youngest daughter was called Mertie (I'm assuming this was a family nickname), and she married a Charles Schultz in 1895. Mertie is buried between her father and husband in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, Michigan.

Tombstone Tuesday: Overview of Oswalt Graves in Riverside Cemetery

The photograph above is an overview of Adam Oswalt's grave, his daughter's grave and his son-in-law's grave. All three are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, Michigan. I am trying to not post as many photographs from Riverside as the cemetery is in a city, but at the moment, I have not had any of my other pictures of rural cemeteries developed. So, I'll just have to post another picture from Riverside Cemetery at the moment.

Tombstone Tuesday: The Other Side of the Minnis/Oswalt Stone

Last week, I posted one side of the Minnis/Oswalt family stone in Beard Cemetery, and this week, I am posting the other side of the stone. As you can see, this picture is a view of Beard Cemetery towards the road it is on and the cemetery is located in a fairly isolated area. The cemetery is mostly surrounded by trees and open fields (from what I can remember), but there is a church that is next to the cemetery. Of course, that is if I have remembered everything correctly. Some day is the future I will write about how my grandparents, brother and I ended up at this cemetery.

Tombstone Tuesday: Another Grave Marker and a View of Beard Cemetery

The photograph above is of the stone behind the graves of Albert and Claudia Oswalt, and they share the stone with the Minnis family. The side facing towards the street has the Minnis name on it, and the other side of the stone has A. Oswalt written on it. (I will show that side next week.)

In this photograph you can also see the tombstones of other burials in Beard Cemetery. The person behind the stone is probably my grandfather who ended up in the picture by accident when I took the picture of the stone. (So far, all of the pictures of tombstones I have posted have been taken by me. Unfortunately, I did not take any photographs of the other graves in the Beard Cemetery, so I will not be able to show a close up of those tombstones. (Someday I might return to Beard Cemetery and take additional photographs.

Searching For My Ancestor's Grave: A Wild Goose Chase, Part Three

In the previous post, I left off at the point where we had returned to our hotel room and eventually went to sleep. Before we went to sleep, though, we had decided that we would pay visits to the the two funeral homes in Three Rivers that the County Clerk's office had recommended that we contact. (Why Three Rivers? Well, my great-grandfather traveled on with his father's body to Three Rivers, and that was where my great-grandfather met up with the local funeral director to bury his father.)

So, the next morning we got up, and after having breakfast in the hotel, we left to visit one of the funeral homes in Three Rivers. The County Clerk's office had given us the name and address of the funeral home and since I had map of the city, we were able to find the place. We went inside, spoke to one of the funeral directors, and explained that we were looking for records as to where we could find the burial place of our ancestor. When we mentioned that the burial occurred in the early 1940s, the man explained that the funeral home we were in did not exist at that time; however, the funeral home had bought out a funeral home that did exist at that time. The funeral, though, did not have the records of the former funeral home because they had given the records to the Three Rivers Public Library. My grandfather and I then decided to return to the Three Rivers library, and see if we could find those records.

In the next part, I will write about our visit to the Three Rivers Library and our visit to another Three Rivers funeral home. Stay tuned ...

Some Wintertime Cemetery Thoughts ...

This is just a post of some of my ramblings thoughts on cemeteries, Michigan and winter at the moment. I'll try not to post too many of these posts in the future, but I just wanted to post some thoughts today because I have not posted very much on this blog since I started it.

At the moment, I am unable to really take photographs of tombstones because of the obvious fact that the weather is not the best for taking pictures. Michigan (and many other states) is blanketed in snow, and thus, to take pictures of cemeteries at the moment would be a waste of film or space. Of course, there are a few cemeteries nearby that I could take pictures of, but the weather is not the best. Over this past weekend, my area got about 8 inches of snow on top of the couple of inches that it received from last week, and so, many tombstones in the cemetery closest to my home are covered. Yet, I am kicking my self because over the holidays the majority of the snow we received in December had melted away, and that would have been the best time for me to have taken pictures of the nearest cemetery. Of course, I probably would have walked to the cemetery since it is just close enough to walk to, but I did not do so because it was still fairly cold at the time. (I would have taken one of my dogs with me when I visited the place, as it is not a very good idea to visit a cemetery alone, and the walk would probably have been too long for him in the wintertime.) Plus, I would have to walk down a dirt road (I live in a rural area), and in the winter time, walking down the road is probably not the safest thing to do since there aren't any sidewalks.

As you can probably tell, I am slightly frustrated that I cannot take any pictures at the moment. I'll have to wait for another thaw or until spring before I can take new pictures. So, until then, I will be posting pictures of cemeteries and tombstones that I took a few years ago. (And some of those pictures have yet to be developed.) So, please stay tuned for more in the future. ...

Tombstone Tuesday: Another Oswalt Grave in Beard Cemetery

The photograph above is of another Oswalt tombstone in Beard Cemetery. The name on the grave is Mary Oswalt, and as far as I know, this Mary is not related to me. I believe her parents are Albert and Claudia Oswalt since she is buried next to them, but I am not 100% sure. In another post, I will include some more information on Beard Cemetery. (Speaking of other posts, I just realized that I have not yet posted more information on Prairie River Cemetery, and I will do so in the future.)

Saginaw City Cemeteries Transcriptions

Although I realize that I am supposed to focus on Michigan rural cemeteries on this blog, I just felt I should mention that the City of Saginaw has put burial transcriptions of the three cemeteries it manages online. I've decided to mention the website anyway because I have a couple of ancestors who died in Saginaw, and I was waiting for the transcriptions to be completed so that I could look and see if my ancestors were buried in one of the three cemeteries. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find either of my ancestors buried in either of the cemeteries, but below is some more information on the website.

Saginaw manages the cemeteries of Oakwood, Brady Hill and Forest Lawn, and you can now search all three of the cemeteries' transcriptions here. Although I have not been successful, I hope that someone else will find this website helpful. Enjoy!

Tombstone Tuesday: Another Beard Cemetery Grave

The photograph above is of another grave located in Beard Cemetery. Again, the person is of another Claudia M. Oswalt, but this one is the wife of Albert Oswalt, whose grave I posted in an earlier Tombstone Tuesday. (I was able to determine their marriage record and from census images.) Unlike the other Claudia Oswalt, whose grave I posted a while ago, the M. in her name stands for her maiden name Minnis. (You can view their marriage record, through FamilySearch Lab's Record Search, here. As far as I can tell, these Oswalts are not related to me.)
